‘For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:

and the government shall be upon his shoulder:

and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor,

The mighty God, The everlasting Father,

The Prince of Peace.’

Isaiah 9 (6)

December 2020

Dear Friend,

‘For though my faith is not yours and your faith is not mine, if we are each free to light our own flame, together we can banish some of the darkness of the world.’ So wrote Lord Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi, who died early last month.

More than ever this year, many of us are striving to hear words of comfort and joy. In a year which has brought so much darkness and difficulty, uncertainty and profound sadness, something in us yearns to feel close to God and to find encouragement in God’s promises to us. We are preparing, of course, to celebrate the coming of Light into the world in the incarnate life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Sacks’ words, though, are a thoughtful reminder to us that across the world’s divides, wherever people choose to kindle something of hope and light in their lives – for themselves or for others – change is possible.

This Advent as we recall the familiar Christmas narratives, may we be blessed with a sense of God’s peace and hope. And may we respond to God’s gift to us by lighting our own flames, one for another.

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

Every blessing,

Sheila Mitchell

Christmas Services

Because Echt church building cannot, at present, accommodate more than 29 people, and numbers are smaller in Midmar, the Kirk Session has made the decision that all Christmas services this year will be online. This will offer our congregation the greatest protection and will avoid the situation where someone may arrive at the church to find all the available places filled!

A children’s service, Christmas Eve Service and Christmas morning service will all be available from Christmas Eve on the Echt and Midmar YouTube channel. If you would like hard copies of the services or CDs, please contact your elder, the Minister (01330 860004) or Session Clerk, (01330 860567).

In the meantime, Sunday morning Worship will continue in Echt Church. To register your interest in coming to a Sunday service, please telephone the Manse (01330 860004) or Elizabeth Watt, Session Clerk (01330 860567), no later than a Friday evening, simply leaving the name and contact number of those who wish to come to the Sunday service.

We continue to work with our neighbouring parishes of Cluny and Monymusk, Kintore and Kemnay to bring you joint worship – this can be accessed online via the church YouTube Channel. The parishes plan to work formally as an ‘area grouping’ within the Presbytery of Gordon, and over the coming year, ministers and Kirk Sessions will further develop their relationships and will begin to plan for increased joint-working in the future.

There are also a variety of worship resources available on the church website. Please visit www.echtandmidmarchurch.co.uk for more information.

Walk out of Lockdown

This has certainly been a different year and although our social committee had so many great plans, none, unfortunately were able to come to fruition. However, during October, a number of members, their family and friends committed to walking to raise much needed funds for the Kirk. We would like to thank the brave walkers, aged from 3 to 80+ who braved the bad weather to clock up an impressive 2000 miles, raising a magnificent total of £3049.51.

Our grateful thanks to everyone who donated to the challenge. We really appreciate your support.

Just Giving

The Church now has a Just Giving page which not only operates for special events such as Walk out of Lockdown, but can be used to give general donations (with gift aid if appropriate) to the Church. Just search Just Giving Echt and Midmar Church.

Echt Players

Over the years the Church has benefited from the generosity of the Echt Players who have staged many wonderful pantomimes. Unfortunately, there will be no pantomime this year but the show must go on in other ways! Follow the attached link, up to Christmas, to watch the genius and entertainment of the Echt Players. https://fb.watch/2gCbEa_3BU/
